Biography

Ginette Reitz

The new millennium started off with a bang for Ginette. First, the Cuarteto de las Misiones, a string quartet that performs educational programs in the schools, was invited to play their program of Mission Music at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Later that season she returned to Washington to perform with the San Luis Symphony as well as in Carnegie Hall in New York City. In April, Ginette recorded a new work called "Credo" by Kyzysztof Penderecki with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Choir. That recording won a Grammy for the best choral performance, a Cannes Classical Award for the best recording of a work by a living composer, and an "Indie" award for the best orchestral performance on an independent label.

As a free lance violinist, Ginette has performed with a range of performers that includes Luciano Pavorotti, Bobby McFerrin, Jimmy Stewart, Garrison Keillor, the Association, and the Michael Morris Dance Troupe.

Locally, Ginette is well known as a founding member of the Larkspur String Quartet & Trio. She performs regularly with the San Luis Symphony, the Master Chorale, Pacific Repertory Opera, as well as the Cuarteto.

Ginette coaches chamber music and teaches violin and viola privately.

Carol Kersten

Carol Kersten has performed with many groups on the Central Coast, including the San Luis Symphony, the Mozart Festival, and the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, the Larkspur String Quartet & Trio, and the Cuarteto de las Misiones. She performs solo and chamber recitals.

As an active music educator, Carol runs a music camp at Shaver Lake every summer. She is very involved with the San Luis Obispo County Youth Symphony and is the director of the Junior Strings and the Preparatory Strings. She lives in Los Osos where she teaches young violin and viola students in her private studio that overlooks the ocean. Her enthusiasm and humor is contagious!

Jeanne Estelle Shumway

Growing up in a musical family in which both parents and sister played the violin, Jeanne Estelle Shumway began musical studies on the violin at the age of 3. She discovered the cello along the way and by the age of 10, the cello won her allegiance. At UCSB and USC Jeanne studied with many notable musicians such as Alice and Eleanor Schoenfeld, Joseph and Lillian Fuchs, and David Wells.

Jeanne is Assistant Principal Cellist with the Santa Barbara Symphony, and Principal with the Opera of Santa Barbara and the San Luis Symphony. She has been a featured soloist with many orchestras in California. Her symphonic work has brought her into contact with many fine conductors such as Henri Teminaka, Christopher Hogwood, Heiichiro Ohyama, Gisele Ben-Dor, and Michael Nowak.

Jeanne is active in many chamber ensembles throughout Southern California. Her piano trio, HELIOS, made its international debut in Japan in 1991, and was featured on the L.A. County Art Museum's "Sunday Afternoon at Four" series. She is seen frequently in the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo area with the Larkspur String Quartet & Trio, the Tolosa Strings, and the Philharmonia Chamber Players.

Jeanne is an active educator, serving on the faculty of California Polytechnic University, and teaching cello privately in both the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara communities.

Nancy Hartley

Nancy Hartley was intrigued by the violin as a five year old and was studying privately within the year. She was invited to play with the San Diego Symphony at seventeen. Since those early years, she has played with the Pasadena, Santa Barbara, and Bakersfield Symphonies. She moved to San Luis Obispo county in 2000 and currently performs with the San Luis Symphony and the Mozart Festival Orchestra.

Nancy loves to play in small chamber music ensembles. She has played in several established groups, most notably over twenty years as first violin of the Santa Barbara Philharmonia Chamber Players.

Nancy musical experiences have included Opera, Musical Theatre, Choral and Oratorical Groups as well as Weddings, Banquets, and Festivals.
